Exercising with Asthma

Exercise is one of the best defenses in the treatment of asthma. It is true that exercise can bring on an asthma attack but it is also an important part of any asthma treatment plan.

It is true that any physical activity increases the body's need for oxygen causing us to breath faster and harderand this can cause breathlessness and wheezing along with a tight feeling in the chest which is what an asthmatic experiences during an attack. However exercise should not be excluded from an asthmatics lifestyle, infact quite the opposite is true.Because exercise increases your overall fitness and physical health many asthmatics will say that they get less attacks when they exercise regularly to when they did no exercise.Asthma and exercise have quite a unique relationship and with proper care and planning go hand in hand.Asthmatics should always consult with their doctors before undertaking any exercise regime and their asthma should be already managed on a daily basis.

Everyone should be encouraged to warm up before exercising and to cool down afterwards to prevent injury. This applies not only to asthmatics but to any one participating in any sports activity. However it is very important for asthmatics to do this as it makes the changes to the breathing pattern more gradual.Always have your inhalers within easy reach(not just when exercising but at all times).

If you are unwell with a cold or the flu or if you are having problems with your breathing,do not attempt to do any exercise as this could very easily trigger an attack. Also if your asthma is not under control and managed on a daily basis, again do not attempt to do any exercise or physical exertion.
